Winter Riding Tips
by Bill Becher
With the winter season coming on, try some of these ideas:
- If your toes get cold, invest in a pair of shoe covers. In
a pinch, cover your toes (over your socks) with plastic wrap,
then put your shoes on. This forms a wind/vapor barrier, keeping
toes warmer.
- Watch out for wet spots on the road, especially after heavy
rains where runoff continues. Try not to turn on wet spots, do
your turning before and after them.
- Be especially careful about crossing metal covers or rail-road
tracks when they are wet.
- Invest in a CVC Rain Jacket!
- Dress in layers, so you can peel off clothing as the day warms
up.
- Try a skier's headband under your helmet to keep ears warm.
- Be careful if riding at dusk and after dark. Wear light colored
clothing above the waist, equip your bike with front light and
rear flasher. California's Vehicle Code also requires front and
rear reflectors, side reflectors on spokes, and pedal reflectors.
- Try skier's glove liners (light glove made of Poly-Pro or
similar fabric) under your cycling gloves.
- If it's really nasty out and you want to stay fit, think about
investing in a cycling stationary trainer or visit the gym (check
out Powerhouse in Westlake).
